Lower back pain is one of the most common health complaints in America. In fact, there are more than 26 million people affected by lower back pain in the United States each year. To make matters worse, there are a number of side effects of lower back pain, some of which can be very severe. Common causes of lower back pain include injury, lifting heavy objects, and sitting or standing with poor posture. In extreme cases, surgery might be necessary, but there are a few different alternative treatment options for lower back pain.

One option is acupuncture. Though some people don’t accept it as a legitimate medical practice, many people do see benefits from it. Acupuncture involves inserting needles in strategic places in the body and is typically used to help treat chronic pain or other conditions. A few sessions may be all a person needs to alleviate back pain.

Another alternative treatment option is taking pain medication. Medications that are commonly used to treat back pain include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (like ibuprofen), narcotics, muscle relaxers, oral steroids, and even antidepressants. These may not be a good option for treatment over a long period of time, as some drugs can have adverse effects on the body with prolonged use.

Physical Therapy
Another alternative option to surgery for back pain is physical therapy. Though suffering from back pain may tempt a person to lay in bed to rest, exercise is actually much better for back pain. Stretching and back exercises, as well as being generally active (usually with low-impact aerobic exercise), can help a person work though back pain and actually prevent it from happening in the future.
