Foot Problems? Your Socks May Be to Blame

Updated 3/24/2021

There are many different types of socks out there. Socks can serve multiple purposes. They can make you more comfortable, and they can be a very useful accessory as well, especially if they are visible when you are wearing them. Many people do not think a lot about socks because they feel that they are not a noticeable part of an outfit anyway. However, the truth is that the types of socks that you wear can really make a difference. For example, they can help keep your feet warm if you are wearing the right types of socks. All socks serve some purpose, but some will be better than others.

Whether you are looking for mens boot socks, amazing mens socks, black cotton crew socks, or black socks for sale, you will be able to find what you are looking for. In some cases, you will have to go to a store, and in some cases, you will be able to find them on a site online. People not only love socks because they keep us warm at night, but also they can be a fashion statement. There are over 40 types of socks based on functionality, occasion, look, length and fabric. If you want socks for exercise, you can get some lightweight running socks. They can be calf-length or ankle-length based on your preference. For comfort, running socks are usually made of cotton with some spandex fiber so that they stretch. A few companies are producing sustainable running socks made of natural materials like organic cotton and merino wool. These socks are eco-friendly and trying to save the environment one pair at a time.

There are a number of companies making some really cool mens socks. They come in over a hundred patterns and designs to choose from, ensuring that you do not have to stick to the usual black, grey, or white socks. You can also get graphic print socks that have been customized to suit your preference. From your favorite logo to background images, the socks will be printed anything you want. If you are not sure where to get socks, you can get them in any store that sells clothes, a market, or vendors that specialize in socks.

Ingrown nail treatment

When you think of getting healthier feet, you probably think of wearing good shoes, practicing good hygiene, and going to see the foot and ankle doctor (officially called a podiatrist) on a somewhat regular basis. Those are certainly important aspects of foot health. But in most discussions of foot care products and foot care tips, there’s an overlooked aspect you should probably be paying more attention to: your socks.

A Sock for All Seasons

At least in the wintertime, people know that wearing socks is a commonsense issue. They heat not only the feet, but contribute to warming the entire body, and prevent chafing and blisters caused by heavy winter boots. But you might not realize that socks are important in the summertime, too. Feet have about 250,000 sweat glands, and socks work to fight odor by absorbing that sweat.

By wicking away that moisture, socks also contribute to infection prevention; the warm, moist environment caused by wearing shoes without socks is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. One of the most common you should be on the lookout for is the fungi tinea pedis, or athlete’s foot. Athlete’s foot might not seem very threatening — and indeed, it can generally be treated by your local podiatrist or even with over-the-counter creams — but it causes quite a bit of discomfort, and can even spread elsewhere on the body (it’s actually the same fungi that causes what’s generally referred to as “jock itch”).

Choosing Your Socks

So what kind of socks should you be wearing to avoid these undesirable effects? People often assume cotton is the best choice because it’s a natural fiber and natural fibers are breathable; the problem with cotton is that once it gets wet, it stays wet for quite a while. That means when worn for exercise or over the course of a full day, cotton socks leave your feet damp and clammy. If you do prefer a natural fiber, wool is a better choice than cotton. But interestingly enough, despite the general superiority of natural fibers, some engineered fibers such as smart acrylics may actually be a better choice for athletes or people with very sweaty feet.

What else, besides going to the foot and ankle doctor promptly when foot problems arise, can help people get healthier feet? Discuss these sock tips and share your thoughts in the comments.
